AMONG THE CONSERVATIVES
The persistent campaign of social crediters towards doubling family allowances, the arguments repeated by them on every possible oc- casion, the resolutions which they have had passed by municipal councils, all this is helping to gain greater and greater support among men who serve the state on a federal level.
Last year, only the members of the C.C.F. supported the Argue motion, presented by one of their own members, for an increase in allowances proportionate to the increase in the cost of living.
This year, we find Conservatives in favour of such increase and declaring it publicity.
The Conservative member for Quebec West asked for an increase in allowances in publics meetings; particularly in the Rivière-du-Loup by- election.
Mr. Balcer, Conservative member for Three Rivers, announced that he will present a motion himself at this session of the House, in favour of increasing family allowances.
The new Conservative member for Restigouche-Madawaska, Mr. Van Horne, comes out squarely in favour of doubled family allowances. (See a letter from him elsewhere in this issue).
In St. John County, Doctor Vial Lavoie, Conservative candidate in the Dec. 19th by-election, outlined his programme for increase in family allowances.
Will the Liberal government in Ottawa remain deaf to a well-founded and just demand which is becoming stronger and stronger, and more and more urgent? Mothers of families of Canada are waiting on you for action, Mr. St-Laurent. And do not wait until the eve of elections, if you do not wish to convey the impression that your party is more interested in power than in the well-being of families.
